Supporting Breast Cancer Awareness Month by Embracing Strength and Healing

As October rolls around, My Body My Pilates is joining the global community in honouring Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

This month is not just about awareness; it's about education, support, and empowerment. We want to take this opportunity to extend our heartfelt support to those affected by breast cancer and share how Pilates can be an invaluable part of the recovery journey.

Understanding Breast Cancer Recovery

Breast cancer recovery is a deeply personal journey, with each individual facing unique challenges. Post-surgery, whether it’s a lumpectomy, mastectomy, or reconstructive surgery, patients often experience a range of physical and emotional hurdles. These can include limited range of motion, muscle weakness, lymphedema, and emotional stress. Understanding what to expect can help in preparing for and navigating through recovery:

Physical Changes

Post-surgery, it’s common to experience swelling, stiffness, and a decrease in arm and shoulder mobility. Scar tissue formation can further restrict movement.

Emotional Impact

The psychological toll of cancer treatment is significant. Anxiety, depression, and body image issues are prevalent and can affect overall wellbeing.

Rehabilitation Needs

Comprehensive rehabilitation is crucial for restoring function and quality of life. This includes physical therapy, exercises to regain strength and flexibility, and mental health support.

How Pilates Can help

Pilates is a holistic exercise method focusing on core strength, flexibility, and overall body awareness. It’s particularly beneficial for breast cancer recovery for several reasons:

💪🏽 Improving Mobility

Pilates exercises are designed to gently stretch and strengthen muscles, which can help in regaining the range of motion lost after surgery.

💪🏽 Enhancing Strength

Targeted Pilates routines can rebuild strength in the upper body, essential for daily activities and overall physical health.

💪🏽 Promoting Emotional Wellbeing

The mindful nature of Pilates can reduce stress and improve mental health, fostering a sense of empowerment and control.
